Extracorporeal Therapy

Extracorporeal therapy (ECT) is defined by blood being processed outside the patient’s body. Our staff has been performing ECT (dialysis, total plasma exchange, and hemoperfusion) for several years and has performed hundreds of treatments. Brief explanations of each ECT are below. If you have questions regarding if you have an eligible case please contact us at (253) 434-5010.

Dialysis

Can expand the window of recovery in those with acute kidney injury most commonly and in some with acute on chronic kidney injury. Dialysis takes over the job of the kidneys while giving them a chance to recover.

Total Plasma Exchange

Total Plasma Exchange (TPE or apheresis) is especially beneficial for dogs with severe autoimmune diseases, such as immune hemolytic anemia (IMHA)—the most common indication—and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). TPE works by physically removing antibodies that drive the disease process. It can also be used to eliminate specific toxins.

Hemoperfusion (HP)

Sometimes dogs and cats ingest things they shouldn’t and some of those medications can cause catastrophic injury. With newly designed filters specifically for veterinary use, we can remove a range of toxins directly from the blood. Common substances we can effectively eliminate include ibuprofen, carprofen (Rimadyl), acetaminophen (Tylenol), ethylene glycol, baclofen, etc.
